Video

So I’ve been busy shooting some videos with a friend and what I discovered is this: it’s a lot of work to ride hunting for location and constantly stop to shoot a five seconds clip !

Anyway, the idea was to show in 3 episodes the kind of riding you can do around Milano; it’s not Liguria, it’s not mediterranean rocky trails, but it’s close and it’s fun.

There’s lots to improve, like for example the shaky camera; I’ve used for 90% of the shots a monopod which is light and easy to setup, but doesn’t give you steady shots — and this has some impact on the final perceived quality of the video.

I also need to watch more carefully if the shots are in focus or not, to keep a constant exposure and so on. The Nikon D7000 doesn’t help here because it’s a real pain in the ass to adjust all the settings before entering Liveview.

For the geeks out there here’s some info on the gear: Nikon D7000 with a Nikkor 35mm f1.8, a 50mm f1.8 and a Tokina 12-24mm; Manfrotto monopod and for a couple of shots I’ve used a Gorilla tripod for SLRs. Oh and my Transition Covert to ride along.

Anyway enjoy this first episode, and watch out this space for the next one entirely filmed on Monte Canto.

"Those of us who were bewitched by his eloquence on the campaign trail chose to ignore some disquieting aspects of his biography: that he had accomplished very little before he ran for president, having never run a business or a state; that he had a singularly unremarkable career as a law professor, publishing nothing in 12 years at the University of Chicago other than an autobiography; and that, before joining the United States Senate, he had voted “present” (instead of “yea” or “nay”) 130 times, sometimes dodging difficult issues."

"I was out running errands today, walking through the city. I remembered, a mile away from home, that a screw had fallen out of my wife’s favorite eyeglasses over the weekend, and that she was waiting for me to fix them. Walking down a city street, I said, “Remind me to fix Amy’s glasses when I get home.” Half an hour later, within a few doors of our house, the reminder went off."

I honestly don’t know what the fuck is with these “beatiful” apps for iOS.

Here’s another one that’s getting raving reviews: it’s a simple task management app that focuses on cloud syncing, changing background pictures, being free etc.

But what’s the point in having all these things that makes an app “beatiful” if it’s so slow in loading a checklist with 20 (twenty ! not a thousand !) items ?

I must say I really wanted to like this app (nice developers from Germany: check!, free as in free beer: check! cross-platform compatibility: check!) but the fact that such a simple task is being handled like it’s DNA sequencing, that I can’t stand.

And so I’m back to the quick & naked checklists of Simplenote.

Oh and the screenshots above ? I’ll leave to your imagination to understand which is which. One is “beatiful”, the other is just quick.

I’ve posted some good shots all on the same theme in my other blog, to celebrate my upcoming wedding.

That’s not jargon

From a review of a soft-science book appeared recently on the New York Times:

Though the authors occasionally lapse into jargon (their barnacles cling to “substrate” until the animals die and their six-plate shells “become disarticulated”)

Substrate and disarticulated jargon? Maybe I’ve been away too long, but it seems to me that substrate and disarticulated are normal words that even a non-scientist can understand (or at least, grasp their meaning).

Egypt and the terrorists

Last Thursday I arrived in the States, and I went through the usual US border immigration procedure. The agent, after careful examination of my passport with lots of Egyptian visa stamps, says:

  • Been to Egypt a lot, ah ?

  • Yes, a few times but it’s been more than a year since my last time.

  • So you haven’t been there after the TERRORIST TAKEOVER ?
